Choosing Shoes for Kids
A healthy mix of barefeet and shoes are great when kids are growing. When your child has pain, though, that’s when we need to take action (growing shouldn’t be painful!). Footwear can often be the first place to start. Check out the footwear advice for more information about the best footwear advice. Many shoe companies make excellent kids stability shoes, New Balance kids shoes are ones we recommend most often.
Custom & Off-the-Shelf Orthotics
For many kids, an off-the-shelf option is a great way to start the treatment process. We recommend our heat mouldable device as it is easily modifiable. This way we can get the closest thing to custom, without having to go all the way. Our off-the-shelf orthotics are easily modifiable. As your child grows, their feet will lengthen and widen, replacing this type of orthotic is easy and low cost.
If your child only needs an orthotic to help them get over an injury, we can talk about tapering them off of the device. There is no need to make them reliant on an orthotic early in life if there’s no need to. As kids grow, their muscles and bones can withstand more, and sometimes they only need the help for a short period. For others, if deformity, weight, or congenital condition is the main reason, they might need some type of orthotic for the long haul.
